The West Coast Wildfire U17 girls advanced to the Norcal Premier State Cup top 8 with a 2-1 win over Tahuichi FC this past weekend. Wildfire will now compete with the 7 other teams to claim the top spot in Northern California.
The sweet 16 in Norcal State Cup competition traveled to Davis this past weekend to compete in a knockout phase to reduced field down to 8. Wildfire faced an up and coming Tahuichi FC team from Santa Rosa. After a week of heavy rains, the fields were muddy and full of divots making control of passes and runs very sporadic. Wildfire came out strong and controlled the flow of the game for the first 20 minutes. A foul in Tahuichi’s attacking half created a scoring opportunity. Tahuichi executed on the set piece and moved ahead 1-0. Although there were many opportunities, Wildfire could not answer in the first half.
The second half started with a change in formation, which immediately gave Wildfire on an offensive advantage. Wildfire finally scored at the 56th minute off a cross from Tatiana Elsea to Forward, Heather Tarabini. The match was not tied 1-1.
Determined to not let the match end in a draw, which would lead to penalty kicks, Wildfire continued to put pressure on Tahuichi’s defense with several attacks and shots that just outside the perimeter of the goal. At the 74th minute, Midfielder Sara Shea delivered a pass to Outside-mid, Savannah Seals. Seals carried the ball to the left corner and advanced to the 18’ mark where she fired a clean shot into the top corner of the right side of the goal. Wildfire moved ahead 2-1. Mentally defeated, Tahuichi could not answer and the match ended with a Wildfire victory and a spot in the top 8.
