Congratulations to West Coast Wild for winning the most coveted cup in California!
West Coast Wild are the undisputed Northern California Champions. U18 Girls West Coast Wild etched their name in California Youth Soccer Association history by winning the state title on Sunday with a convincing 6-2 victory of top ranked Juventus Zebre. Wild who are currently three time Norcal State Champions and back to back US Club National Champions wanted a chance to show their talent in the CYSA form of competition.
West Coast was recently granted league affiliation from the CYSA board in April and are now an official CYSA member club. What this means is that they have the right to compete for any and all state titles. Coach Troy Dayak “I remember the CYSA State Cup as the holy grail of soccer” CYSA has the largest membership of soccer players in the country thus propelling the Wild to the top of the youth soccer food chain.
Wild played the CYSA state semi final match on Saturday against the Mt Hamilton FC team and took care of business out shooting them 27-0 and earning an impressive 8-0 win. Goals were scored by Devyn Gilfoy, Lauren Sisneros, Delanie Sheehan, Kasidee Wiley, Camilla Fonseca and a hat trick by Sienna Zobroski. To make things more difficult Wild had a Norcal round of 16 game scheduled at 9am in Turlock Sunday the morning of the CYSA final later that afternoon. “The way we looked at it, it was a warm up game before the championship, no reason to be negative and have the poor us syndrome, let’s turn this into a positive and work on some things we know we will need to be sharp on for later.”
Sharp was an understatement as they knocked out Manteca FC with a 10-1 result. The CYSA state final was set then between West Coast Wild and Juventus on a hot afternoon in Tracy California both teams were looking to make their mark. Zebre knowing the Wild had an earlier game that day and might be tired went after them hard firing shots from anywhere and everywhere and with the Wild’s normal GK missing due to serious training injury they put the pressure on stand in (field player) GK Devyn Gilfoy. Gilfoy rose to the occasion stuffing several serious shots early on. Wild weathered the early storm and struck back with a nice goal from Sydney Lunt and the cross from Kasidee Wiley to go ahead 1-0. Robyn McCarthy crossed in a beautiful ball to Lauren Sisneros who leaped up and headed it in to make the lead by two. Zebre bounced back picking up a loose ball in the midfield and fired a shot past Gk Gilfoy making it 2-1. Just before half and with coach Dayak shouting “let’s get one to end the half” McCarthy with a long throw in hit target player Haley Bostard with a flick to Delanie Sheehan making it 3-1 just before the whistle blew. Second half Wild came out strong playing their style of soccer and Robyn McCarthy again serviced Sisneros for goal 4. Moments later Zebre countered with another goal making it 4-2. In the 31st minute Kasidee Wiley (the archer) entered the game and put the game away with two solid goals with assists from Zabroski & Sheehan.
Wild secured the 6-2 victory and hoisted the coveted CYSA State Cup for the first time in club history.
