The West Coast Soccer Club 05 premier girls team Wildkatz competed in the prestigious Davis Legacy College Showcase on Friday, July 14th-16th in Davis, California. The Wildkatz were coming off a month long summer break, but took to the pitch ready to play. First up for the Wildkatz was a match against CDA FC Slammers out of So Cal. Within minutes of the start of the game, Slammers were able to score, but Wildkatz answered with a goal of their own by Katie Strong and the game was tied 1-1 early on in play. Slammers scored again early in the second half and again the Wildkatz answered with a goal tying the game again. Despite out shooting the Slammers 14-4 the Wildkatz were unable to score again and late in the game, Slammers scored ending the game 3-2. The second game of the tournament found Wildkatz facing the number one 05 girls team in northern California, Placer United Gold. With goals by Strong and Emma Colmenero early in play, the Wildkatz led Placer 2-0. Wildkatz defence held Placer scoreless until close to the end of the game, but Wildkatz took the win 2-1 giving Placer, who has been playing-up in the 04 bracket of NorCal, one of their first losses in quite some time. Day 2 of tournament play, Wildkatz met Folsom Lake Earthquakes. Folsom was able to score early in the game, but Wildkatz answered with 4 goals in just the first half of play, with goals scored by Strong, Colmenero, Cameron Silva and Karlee Lywandowsky. Wildkatz defense held Folsom scoreless in the second half of play and scored again with a goal by Zusette Zamora, to end the game with a 5-1 win and securing their spot in semi-finals. In the semi-finals match, Wildkatz faced Blues FC out of Rocklin, California. The match was physical from the start. Wildkatz scored early in the game leading he game 1-0 during the first half of play. In the second half, Blues were able to score after a penalty kick to tie the game 1-1. Wildkatz answered with another goal and the game would end with a win and trip to the championship for Wildkatz. On Sunday, July 16th, in the championship match of the tournament, Wildkatz would face Placer United again. The game was evenly matched from the start. Late in the first half, Placer was able to score on a long high ball and the Wildkatz were down 1-0 at the half. In the second half of play, Jazmine Staples took a great pass from Colmenero, sprinted past all the Placer defenders and sent the ball to the back of the net, making the score 1-1. The second half of play ended in a draw and the game went into two 5 minute overtimeperiods. Despite many shots on goal by the Wildkatz, the overtime period ended and the game went to penalty kicks. Both teams were evenly matching in penalty kicks, but Placer was able to make a shot and Wildkatz could not answer and the match and championship went to Placer. Coach Troy Dayak said, “The girls did amazing. We played with a fewer players than any other team and we out played them all, all the way to the last whistle.” Next up for Wildkatz is widely known San Diego Surf Cup, August 4th – 7th where they will face teams from around the United States.
