WCS 05 Krush represent in LV, go 2-1

The West Coast Soccer Krush 05 Girls team traveled to Las Vegas this past weekend to play in the City of Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup tournament, coming away from the weekend with 2-1 record in the tournament, seven different players scoring and great team play throughout the weekend.

In their first game of the tournament, Krush faced off against Prime SC 05G JSP from Nevada. Within the first minute of the game, Kimmie Keller received a drop kick from goalie Jillian Barth, maneuvering the ball past a Prime defender and placed the ball in the back of the net, giving Krush an early 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Presley Perez stole the ball from a Prime defender, passed it off to Makenna Galvan who shot the ball over the goalie’s out-reached hand, making the score 2-0. However, Krush wasn’t done yet. Kaya Whittaker intercepted a goal kick with a single touch, shooting the ball right back at the goal for Krush’s third goal of the game. Scoring wasn’t the only thing Krush had going for them in the first half. Center back Katherine Phelps had a fantastic save right in front of the Krush goalie box, breaking up a Prime scoring attempt right at the last second with a slide tackle. Before the half was over, Katelyn Cainey scored one more time for Krush, with an assist from Galvan, before time expired. Although Krush had several good looks in the second half, Krush did not score again. Final score 4-0, with a shutout victory for goalie Barth.

Saturday’s afternoon game against Elite FC Strikers from New Mexico was a tough battle for Krush. In the first half. Krush once again scored in the first minute of the game when Perez got a rebound off Elite’s goal keeper and followed up with a tap into the goal, giving Krush another early 1-0 lead. Perez scored again later in the half when Daisy Tompkins crossed the ball to her and she was able to lob the ball into the net, for a 2-0 Krush lead. After ending the first half 2-1, Krush continued playing strong, with a solid passing game, but in the end Krush lost in a close 3-2 game.

Krush’s faced off against its final opponent of the weekend Sunday morning, LA Roca LP from Utah. Krush started off a little slow early, with LA Roca controlling the tempo of the game. However midway through the first half they started connecting with strong passing plays between defense, midfielders and forwards. Sydney Goodwin saved a last second rebound goal midway through the first half, with a sweeping kick right in front of the goal, to clear the ball out of the box. Deciding to mix-up the lineup a little before the end of the half, Coach Sara Girotto moved Kira Korsak, normally a defensive back, to defensive mid for the remainder of the half, and the move paid off. Less than a minute to go Cainey, facing off against a LA Roca defender, passed the ball back to Korsak who shot the ball well outside the 18-yard box, lobbing the ball over the LA Roca goalie to find the back of the net, giving Krush a 1-0 lead at the half. The second half was all Krush, with four more goals scored by Keller, Hailey Garvin (two goals) and Cainey, with assists by Garvin, Keller, Tompkins and Korsak. Final score 5-0 Krush, and another shutout for Barth.
