05 Krush into State Cup Premier finals for 2nd year in a row

West Coast Krush 05 Girls team is moving on to the State Cup Championship after a spirited weekend of State Cup play in the quarter and semifinal games, winning the quarter final game 5-2 and the semifinal 1-0 in Hayward this past weekend.

Krush’s weekend began bright and early Saturday morning, facing off against Santa Cruz City YSC SC Jaws 05 White. Krush started off a little slow, but found their pace change when Paisley Merlin sent the ball up the field, finding Hailey-Ann Stubbles, who crossed the ball to Sutton Denny. Denny then maneuvered around the Santa Cruz defender and shot the ball past the opponent’s goalie, finding the far side of the net. Denny scored her second goal with a scrappy assist by Brooke Gale giving Krush a 2-0 lead going into the half.

With momentum on their side, it didn’t take long for West Coast to score again in the second half. Lauren Stoneberger sent a cross to the front of the goal. The Santa Cruz goalie made a play on the ball, but Cassidy Pearson was waiting right in front, able to receive the rebound and tap it into the net. Two minutes later, Krush scored their fourth goal of the game. Kira Korsak, taking the free kick after a Santa Cruz penalty, dropped the ball right in front of Pearson. Pearson passed the ball up to Chloe Thomas, who juggled the ball over a Santa Cruz defender, allowing Stoneberger to tap the ball into the goal.

Santa Cruz started to come back, scoring two goals with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the game, but Krush wasn’t done yet. At the 33-minute mark, Denny’s throw-in from the sideline found Stubbles, who shot the ball from the 18-yard line into the goal. Final score 5-2 Krush.

Saturday’s win placed Krush in the State Cup Semi-finals against SF Aftershocks FC 05G Black Sunday morning. Right from the start, this was a physical, defensive game. The score remained 0-0 throughout most of the game, with both sides battling hard for the ball, but neither team able to find the back of the net. With less than 12 minutes remaining in the game Hailey-Ann Stubbles passed the ball up to Kira Korsak, who sent a soft-touch pass right back to Stubbles. Stubbles dribbled through three SF defenders, sending the ball past the diving goalie, scoring the first, and what wound up being the only, goal in the game.

The Krush defense withstood a late increase offensive effort by SF, with notable saves by goalie Grace Langenfeld, and one from Sutton Denny, whose heads-up play saved a tying goal late by kicking the ball away in midair. Final score 1-0 with Krush earning their way into the State Cup Premier Championship for the second year running.

Strong play by defenders Makena Ross, Katherine Phelps, Kimmie Keller, Korsak and Denny locked down the field and overlapping the entire game, with goalie Langenfeld having seven saves for the game (and 10 for the weekend). Midfielders Mia Mirante, Khushleen Hothi, Emily Hollingshaus contributed the entire game, strengthening the middle and forwards Stubbles, Vanessa Gomez, Paisley Merlin, Cassidy Pearson, Chloe Thomas, Brooke Gale and Lauren Stoneberger, continually making plays on the balls throughout the game.

Krush will face off against LFC IAA Bay Area 05G Acedemy 1 for the Premier State Cup Champions on February 25 in Modesto.
