The West Coast Wildfire U15 girls kicked off their 2014 fall season with a 3-3 draw against the top ranked California Magic. Wildfire’s Paola Samaniego scored first by breaking a tackle and going one on one with the Cal Magic goalie. Samaniego perfectly placed a shot over the goalie’s reach and into the far right corner of net. Cal Magic responded several minutes later with their first goal. Goal two for the Wildfire came from Izzy Perez with another broken tackle and a one on one with the goalie. And again, Cal Magic responded with another leaving the game 2-2 at the half. Midway through the second half, Samaniego scored again by sinking a beautifully placed corner kick from Meghan Giamona. This gave the Wildfire a 3-2 lead with twenty minutes left in the match. With both teams battling, and only minutes to go, Cal Magic managed to break through the Wildfire defense to fire off a shot resulting in a goal. The game ended in a 3-3 draw.
This is the first time the Wildfire has ever played the higher ranked Cal Magic. In anticipation of facing a strong offensive assault, the Wildfire brilliantly executed a new formation introduced by Coach Troy Dayak earlier in the week. The Wildfire mid-fielders were able to break up offensive attacks from the strong Cal Magic’s forwards. And, the solid Wildfire defense battled to keep shots on goal to a minimum.
The West Coast Wildfire U15 team is participating in two Northern California premier leagues, CalNorth Premier and Norcal Premier. By playing games in both leagues, the girls expand their fall season with additional games against new competition and gain additional match-play experience.
